MUSIC
The Choir
St. Aidan’s is fortunate in having a four-part robed choir to lead the music in the services. Music has always played a central role in the worship since the first choir formed in 1896. The choir currently consists of 20 members and is often augmented for larger occasions. A number of the choristers are experienced soloists in the Leeds area – singing with local Choral and Opera Societies.
The choir is familiar with a number of settings of the Eucharist, which are rotated. Current settings include Music for the Parish Communion by How, Communion Service by Rutter, The Salisbury Service by Ives as well as a traditional plainsong service. During the Mass the choir sing an anthem. The repertoire of anthems is large, from the 16th century to the present day.
Holy Week is a particular busy time for the choir – St. Aidan’s is unique in holding a choral service every day during Holy Week. For the first time in December 2009 the choir led a traditional Carol Service.
Listen to the choir singing Adam lay yboundon by Boris Ord from that service.
The choir is affiliated with the Royal School of Church Music.
