Report of the Justice and Peace meeting at S. Aidan’s Church 3.9.12
Present: Fr Alan, Kathryn Fitzsimmons, Tony Jowitt, Margaret Halsey, Aidan Hallett, Caroline Ugbo
Apologies: Mo Diana, Br. Kentigern
One World Week 21 October. It was decided that we should have a meal after the Mass with a sample of food from the different nationalities that make up our church congregation. The following individuals were suggested to bring food:
Zimbabwe – Prisca
Iran – Ali Reza
Carribbean – Margaret Stoute/ Pancy
England – Rosemarie
Eritrean – Lemlem and Almaaz
Kathryn will get One World week resources for display, Aidan will bring a map to show where we were all born.
The event should go into the notices at the beginning of October
Asylum Paper. This had been passed round and approved, and it was suggested that the format Br Kentigern used should go onto the website.
University Report. Rachel, who compiled this report on sexuality issues with S. Aidan’s help, has come back asking if anything has changed since the report was made. Alan will take the outcome of the discussion back to Diana who is in contact with Rachel.
Food Parcels. There were about 25-30 given out this week. Andy gave them out but Ben and Andy didn’t turn up to refill the bags. It was suggested that some of the Iranians might be willing to help. The monetary contributions are given to Tony, but it was thought that Donny should receive the money and then we can get the gift aid. The money would then go back to Tony for use.
Food Banks. Kathryn reported that these have been set up in West and East Leeds. St. Vincent’s the debt advice centre on York Road is running out of food for its drop in. Fr. Alan will mention this at Deanery Chapter.
Contingency Fund. This was approved by the PCC (now DCC) to help asylum seekers in real trouble, needing more than a helping hand. Again this needs to attract Gift Aid when money is received for it.
Harvest Sunday 23 October. We are using a Christian Aid focus on India. There should be a notice this coming week about bringing tinned food. Also about the Fair Trade stall that same Sunday.
