Lucy Appleyard - Choral Director

Lucy joined her first choir Throstle Nest at the age of four where she sang her first solo as The little one in Ten in the Bed. This started a lifelong love of singing with choirs. She went on to join the choir of Christ Church, Great Ayton at the age of seven where she stayed until leaving school to study at Leeds College of Music.

Whilst at college, Lucy sang with the LCM Choral society, chamber choir and formed her own quartet called The Owls, named after the Leeds City emblem. She was a choral scholar as part of the professional adult choir at Leeds Cathedral and sang with the Hildegard singers, an upper voice choir singing sacred music at venues such as York Minster and Leeds Parish Church.

Lucy is currently a principal soloist with St Peter’s Singers directed by Dr Simon Lindley and sings with Ecclesia Ensemble directed by David Condry. As a soloist Lucy has performed professionally in countless operatic and oratorio roles and is in demand as a mezzo-soprano on the local concert scene. A particular interest of hers is the operettas of Gilbert and Sullivan.  She has performed many of the mezzo-soprano and contralto roles, and is a regular performer at the Buxton International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival.

As well as conducting the choir at St Aidan’s, Lucy co-runs three choirs at Hill House School, Doncaster with Kristina James. Together they run the school Staff choir, Years one and two choir and the Chamber choir with which they are a planning a tour to Europe in the future.
